About Sam

Why I'm Running

Democracy is about choice; leadership is about results. I'm running for Mayor because I love my community, and Oak Bay hasn't had the choice, accountability, or results that residents expect. I believe Oak Bay deserves better access to healthcare, excellent transit, affordable housing, and safe cycling and walking.

My focus as a community organizer and professional has always been about bringing people together to tackle complex problems—tackling bike theft, building housing affordability, and getting better transit for our city, to name a few of the problems I've helped organize around. I'm overjoyed to have been part of projects like creating our region's first professional bike valet program and tackling low vacancy rates by legalizing thousands of new homes across the Capital Region.

Looking Ahead

Key Priorities

Four core priorities for Oak Bay's next four years. These are my top priorities, not my full platform. See the full platform.

Climate

Climate change is here. Just a few weeks ago, I stood in the normally extremely wet forests in the north of the Island, breathing smoke, and feeling ash settle on my face. The heat dome killed far too many in our community. We need bold action to protect Oak Bay residents from smoke and heat, as well as reduce emissions.

Healthcare

I don't have a family doctor. My mom has waited for more than a year for hip surgery that keeps her from doing the things she loves, and the date keeps getting pushed back. My friends with chronic medical conditions are left to self-manage medications because they can't get in to see a doctor more than once or twice a year. While healthcare is a Provincial responsibility, Oak Bay has the power to make a major difference.

Affordability

Even my friends who earn well above average can't afford to raise kids without significant help from family. Many people my age are choosing not to have kids at all. I too want to be able to afford to raise a family in this community, alongside the friends and family that I treasure deeply. I am fully invested in lowering the cost of living in Oak Bay.

Infrastructure

Due to flagrant financial mismanagement, Oak Bay now has the highest property taxes in the Province. High taxes may be worth it if they come with good services. Instead, Oak Bay is stuck with declining services and an infrastructure maintenance backlog of more than $300 million. I commit to fixing Oak Bay's infrastructure quickly and efficiently. At the same time, I will work to spread out sudden tax increases and build a sustainable tax base.
